About
Lia Rees lives in London. Since 2005, she has been living with an acquired brain injury. The memoir "But I'm Not Depressed" is a direct window into her much-changed mental landscape. Neurological damage can send people into a surreal reality, then remove the verbal skills needed to describe it.
Her symptoms were labelled a mood disorder and mistreated for years. She wrote the book to save other survivors from the psychology trap. Lia is unusual in wanting to see more science and less "empathy" in medicine. The current biopsychosocial model claims to be humane and respectful, even as it sends some patients into a backwater of endless talk therapy, assumes they are deluded and irrational, and puts a lid on all further investigation.
"But I'm Not Depressed" uses a lyrical, honest writing style to convey the loss of language and personality itself, and her search for answers in a flawed medical system. It aims to be understandable without simplifying too much.
Her "day job" involves creating book covers and videos for authors. She also has ambitions for a science fantasy trilogy and a concept album. A follow-up book is planned on the effects of brain injury in high-IQ people.
